During the January school holidays, Year 12 student Sarah Danseco had the incredible opportunity to travel to Brisbane for the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF), held from 13–21 January. Thanks to the generous support and sponsorship of Heirisson Rotary, Sarah was able to participate in one of Australia’s most prestigious STEM programs for young people.
The NYSF brought together 250 students from all across Australia, each eager to explore future STEM pathways, meet like‑minded peers, and learn from leading scientists and industry professionals. For Sarah, the trip offered far more than a deep dive into science—it was a week filled with connection, confidence‑building, and unforgettable experiences.
Throughout the forum, students met representatives from NYSF’s partnering organisations, gaining valuable insights into future study options, career pathways, and the diverse world of STEM professions. Mentors were on hand to share advice, answer questions, and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.
But the program wasn’t all labs and lectures.
NYSF also included concerts, discos, parties, and social events, giving students plenty of chances to unwind, have fun, and build friendships. One standout experience was “Connections and Confections,” a large networking event designed to push students out of their comfort zones. With sweets and conversation flowing, this event challenged Sarah and others to meet new people—including fellow students, mentors, and industry guests—and develop their networking skills in a supportive environment.
Students were divided into smaller groups for hands‑on excursions to real workplaces. Sarah visited Seqwater and Forensic Science laboratories, where she discovered a strong interest in the Human Biology and Chemistry side of forensic work, including analysing evidence and using chemical processes.
Throughout the program, Sarah made new friends from Perth and from across the country, building connections she hopes to keep long after the forum.
We congratulate Sarah on representing our school so proudly and thank Heirisson Rotary for supporting her incredible opportunity.
