Girrawheen SHS wins AGL WA State Solar Car Challenge 3 years in a row!

For the third year in a row, Girrawheen Senior High School has won the WA AGL Energy State Solar Car Challenge held at the UWA!

Our students have been working tirelessly before school, in their lunch times and after school all term to build five solar cars. Five teams would race in the State Solar Car Challenge on Thursday 26th October. All five cars qualified in the top 8 for the Grand Final on Friday 27th October.

Edward Guo in Year 9 won first place, claiming this title in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The team made of Mathias Creemers, Liam Rowe, Rose Vu and Fiat Po in Year 9 placed third. All 5 students have qualified for the National Solar Car Challenge held in Tasmania in November this year.

Our Science Head of Learning Area and STEM Club Coordinator, Charan Pabla, said that Girrrawheen’s success can be attributed to the students wanting to participate in the challenge themselves. “They are interested, they carry out their own research, come up with designs, materials, and work on those designs, tweaking them as problems arise.”

Students did a flawless job representing our school. They commented to say that the ice cream at the annual event was a crowd pleaser again.
