Supporting Breast Cancer Research at GSHS
Since 1994, the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) has invested over $200 million into more than 600 world-class research projects. Thanks to advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment, the breast cancer death rate in Australia has reduced by over 40%. While this is a significant achievement, there is still more work to be done.
Following a recent breast cancer diagnosis affecting a valued member of our school community, Girrawheen Senior High School proudly joined NBCF’s “Wear It, Shave It, Colour It” campaign. Throughout the month of June, staff and students came together to raise awareness and funds for this important cause.
Many staff participated by wearing pink all month or colouring their hair pink, and on 26th June, the school held a Free Dress Day, encouraging students to wear pink and bring a gold coin donation. The day featured two vibrant market sessions where students could purchase a variety of donated items, including key rings, handmade crochet pieces, bracelets, stickers, and delicious cupcakes prepared by our Home Economics department.
Additional activities included a hair styling station, two photo booths, and a raffle for a stunning dot painting titled “The Seven Sisters,” generously donated by Louise Ockerby from STARS. The raffle proved to be a highlight of the day, with plenty of excitement from participants.
The event was a wonderful display of community spirit, with both staff and students enthusiastically supporting the cause. Together, we are proud to have raised an impressive $5,967 so far.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who donated, contributed items, participated in activities, or showed support by wearing pink. It is moments like these that reflect the strength and generosity of the Girrawheen SHS community.
