Dear Parents and Guardians

New release Netflix Film- To the Bone

Netflix is currently promoting across social media the film To the Bone (Released July 14).  This series focuses on a girl with Anorexia, the way the story is depicted, has raised concerns from Headspace and also the Butterfly foundation in that those who have had an eating disorder or currently do, may be put at further risk and for those who are vulnerable, this may increase their likelihood to engage in this behaviour. Below are 2 links, a media statement from headspace, the other, from the butterfly foundation who have also put together a fact sheet on how this series should be spoken about and some guidelines for parents and young people.

The positive aspect of To the Bone is that it will hopefully raise awareness of the complexities, challenges and fears of someone living with an eating disorder, including their families. Whilst we want to have conversations about this, eating disorder exposure in teens where body image and peer influences are high can be social contagion therefore has to be managed in a considered way.

If you have any concerns for your child, we offer support through our School Psychologist and CARE Team in association with external agencies. Please call the school on 9247 0555 to make an appointment to discuss your concerns.

The Butterfly Foundation's national Helpline ED HOPE is another resource. Contact on either 1800 33 4673 0r

Please read the articles for more information from headspace or butterfly foundation.
